Elemental Herbs All Good Goop Review

All Good Goop

All Good Goop

I love to go barefoot – and if hiking and being in the water a lot aren’t enough to ruin them, going barefoot puts them on the ‘not to be seen in public’ list.   The skin gets dry due to being in and out of the water all the time.  I smashed my big toe a few years ago, and the nail never grew back right.  Add to that – going barefoot roughs up the bottoms.

Dressing to stay warm

October 24, 2009

dressing for coldSounds easy enough, right?  So why do so many folks venture out unprepared and under dressed for the conditions they encounter?  The fact that hypothermia kills more outdoorsman than all other natural factors combined should get our attention.   And by natural factors, I mean things like drowning, snake bites, lighting strikes, bear attacks etc.

Kokatat Paddling Jacket

October 23, 2009

~Leesa

I’ve been fortunate to have quite a few opportunities to paddle this fall, mostly in my kayak, but also in a canoe.

Kokatat GORE-TEX Paddling Jacket

Kokatat GORE-TEX Paddling Jacket

Paddling in the summer means shorts and a t-shirt most of the time, without worries about weather or water temperatures.  Fall, in Maine is another story.  Getting splashed can make for very uncomfortable paddling.  Even if the sun is out, the water and air can be very cold.

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandals are HERE!

October 20, 2009

ChacofeetI have ugly feet, a tendency not to trim my toe nails as much as I should, and an unnatural desire to wear sandals year round.  While these habits are not going to make me extremely popular around my house anytime soon, it does mean that I am probably the perfect person test out a pair of Chaco’s Z/1 Unaweep Sandals.

Lincoln Canoe and Kayak Visit

Rich holding on to the 5.3 Kevlar canoe.

Columbus Day weekend weekend I had the opportunity, along with an old friend, Rich, to visit Lincoln Canoe and Kayak in Freeport, Maine.   Lincoln has been around for over 50 years, and was recently purchased by Ponch Membreño and Marc Bourgoin, both ‘Mainers’.  They have some great ideas for growing the business, while still keeping the reputation for great workmanship on their boats.

Injinji Tetrasock Liner

NuBamboo Injinji Sock Liner

NuBamboo Injinji Sock Liner

~Leesa

I’ve been trying out two pair of Injinji liner socks over the last month or so, in many different ways.   I received a white and a tan pair of crew length liners from the Tetrasock group. This is considered a first layer sock to be worn with an outer sock.  5 separate toe sleeves for your toes of thin, anti-friction membrane that is lightweight and breathable.  The theory is that keeping the toes from rubbing together, reduces the risk of blisters.

Ryders Eyewear 09 Adrenaline-Interchangeable VTX Sunglasses

October 16, 2009

vtxoncase

While the song clearly states that the “Stars at night are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas,” I can safely tell you that the sun is just as big and bright around here.  This means that wearing sunglasses is an everyday event for me no matter what I am doing. Whether I am driving, hiking, fishing, running, or even mowing the yard, I tend to wear sunglasses of one sort or another.

Keep on reading to find out more about these sunglasses..

Ryders Swerve Pro sunglasses

October 15, 2009
Ryders Swerve Pro sunglasses
reviewed by Coy Starnes
The Ryders Swerve Pro are part of the adrenaline series.  My sunglasses are in the essential category which translates into the base model.  Other lens are available such as polarized and photochromic, but even as the base lens, the essential is no slouch with optically-correct, shatterproof, scratch resistant polycarbonate lens that offer offer 100% UV protection.  The sunglasses come with a cloth storage sack with a drawstring closure and while a hard case would be nice it is more of a luxury.  There was no lens cloth but the storage bag is made of a nice soft material and I think it will suffice to keep them clean out in the field.
Hear are the key specifications for the Swerve Pro-essential in the black frame and gray standard lens combination.  Other frame colors and lens color/type are available.
FRAME: GLOSS BLACK, DURAFLEX
LENS: GREY FLASH, POLYCARBONATE, 100% UV PROTECTION
TINT: 15% VLT
FIT: MEDIUM
FEATURES: ADJUSTABLE ANTI-SLIP NOSE PADS, ANTI-SLIP TEMPLE TIPS
PRICE: $44.99
When I first tried on my Swerve Pros I was please with how they fit.  The nose pad is adjustable but I didn’t find any need to do any adjusting.  They also feel very light on my face, almost like I’m not wearing sunglasses.   Of course I’ve noticed this with several other sunglasses so maybe it is a trend in the industry. I am also pleased with the look, and according to my wife, they look better on me than most of my other pairs of sunglasses.  I picked the Swerve Pro style because they remind me of the glasses I see pro bike riders wearing.  Unfortunately, I’m not pro…but I can look the part.
Some Interesting  and Useful Features
The Swerve Pro sunglasses have what looks like vents at the top and bottom of the lens.  I’m not sure if having an opening as apposed to having no bottom frame makes air go around the back side of the lens better to reduce fogging or not but I have noticed that vented sunglasses do tend to fog less.  I think just enough air hits the frame and is forced down the backside of the lens to help reduce the fogging effect.  I will find out how these work as soon as we get some sunny weather.  I haven’t seen the sun since I got these and the forecast is calling for more rain the next few days.
Another feature is the Hydrophilic nose-pads and/or temple tips which are found on every pair of sunglasses throughout our Adrenaline Collection.  According to Ryders, the material used in these parts actually gets tackier with moisture ensuring that no matter what the conditions, the sunglasses are going to stay in place.   Anyways, stay tuned to find out how they perform.  I plan to use them most while riding my recumbent but also for driving and other times when I need sunglasses.

Turning Litter into a Fulfilling Family Experience

If you are like me, when you drive past those signs indicating that a section of a highway has been adopted by a given person or group you feel grateful for them doing that and the desire to do it yourself. However, if you are also like me you have dozens of excuses why you just never get around to doing it.

High Sierra Sport Company Long Trail pack

October 9, 2009

I recently received the High Sierra Long Trail backpack. It has 5500 cubic inch capacity. It weighs 6.1 pounds and has an internal frame.

Ok, so even though I live in rainy Maine, the sun comes out enough to use this sweet piece of gear!  The Brunton Solaris i6 Foldable iPod charger!

Update – I’ve been using the charge over the summer, and really like the convenience.   I can lay it out on the picnic table, or over the top of the tent, and it charges up my phone while I am making lunch, or hanging out with friends.    ~ Leesa

Princeton Tec Remix headlamp

October 9, 2009

Review by Arnie P

Princeton Tec Remix Headlamp

This headlamp is not only light in weight but provides a lot of light.  It weighs 83 gm or 3 oz which is about the same weight as a package of Ramen.  This lamp has 4 settings a high and low brightness setting in the wide beam or 3 led mode and a high and low setting in the narrow beam or single led mode.  I liked the simplicity of the operation of the single switch.  Pressing firmly and quickly turns on the headlamp.  Pressing the switch partway down changes the beam intensity from high to low.  To change from wide beam to narrow beam I held the mode switch down for about 3 seconds.  The switch remembers the last mode of operation.  I like this because I use the wide beam mode most of the time.  I needed a little practice to press the switch partway down.  The Remix can be adjusted vertically.  The range of adjustment is from slightly above eye level to almost straight down.  The headband adjusts easily and stays adjusted.

I started using the Remix to travel around the house at night.  In the morning I put it on my head to come down for breakfast.  After eating breakfast I go to the gym, on a couple occasions I found I was wearing the headlamp as I was getting out of the car at the gym.  It is so light and comfortable that I forget that it is on my head.  The Remix has worked well for me on local walks after dark

I am looking forward to taking the Remix on backpack trips and hikes when it is dark at the end of the hike.  I will be updating this report in about a month.

Ellington Annie Yoga Bag

Ellington Annie Yoga Bag

Ellington Annie Yoga Bag

The first thing I noticed about this tote was the color scheme – dark teal with brown trim. I really thought they looked great together (it was actually the same color as the sweater I was wearing at the time).  I immediately started searching the bag and found a lot of small pockets, great for cell phones, wallets, etc., a feature I find really useful, as it eliminates the need to carry yet another bag.

Merrell

by Arnold

I had always associated Merrell with very comfortable shoes and boots and I have 3 pairs to prove it.  When I put the Merrell Morph jacket on, I was not surprised to find it very comfortable.  I expect to be using this jacket mostly for local day hikes in the fall and spring, due to the jacket being a bit heavy.

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew Coffee Review

October 3, 2009

singleservepacket One of the reasons that I am an avowed tea drinker  on most of my hiking trips is because there is no good way to make real coffee. Instant coffee is probably the first thing that all hikers try and I am willing to bet not one single real coffee drinker has found too much satisfaction in instant coffee. It is bad enough that real coffee tastes poorly to my palate, but instant coffee takes the taste to a whole new level of nasty.  It just does not taste bad, it tastes evil.
