KT Tape – update

January 31, 2010

When I started this review and found out it involved no medicine, I was skeptical. Pain relief and improved recovery time by simply applying tape?!?! Sure, got a bridge to sell me?

I am not the kind of person who wears copper bracelets, magnets in my shoes, or a wire pyramid on my head. [If any of these work for you, good I am happy for you, but it is just not the sort of thing I normally go in for.]

Nevertheless, I have to say that at least for me, this KT Tape stuff really works, and I intend to continue to use it.

MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes

January 29, 2010

Ever want to go for a walk…up a hill…a STEEP hill…and oh yea, it just might be covered with deep snow?

Images courtesy of MSRCrazy as it sounds; some of us actually call this sort of thing recreation. Now while I may leave the lovely flat valleys of Central Washington to explore the Cascade mountains in the winter for no better reason than it is hard (and sometimes amazingly beautiful), but making it harder by putting too much weight on my feet or not having sufficient traction to do it safely is not part of the plan. After all, I have to draw the line someplace.

This is where the MSR Lightning Assent Snowshoes come in. Lightweight but loaded with features; follow along as I put these to the test over the next few months.

ColdAvenger Update

January 29, 2010
When I first got the ColdAvenger, winter was just hinting of things to come. My first few uses were on some chilly mornings and a couple of night-time recumbent bike rides because mid-day temps were just not cold enough to justify using the face mask. Then, in late December 2009 and into early January 2010, we had some record setting cold weather. In fact it never got above freezing for a week straight which is unusual for north Alabama.  It was 7 F one morning and 8 F and 10 F on two more.  It was during this time period that I truly came to appreciate having the ColdAvenger as part of my winter clothing arsenal.

Camping Washington – Book Review

January 27, 2010

The day’s high was 15F and of all the things I could receive in the mail (warm socks would have been nice), I received a book on Washington Campgrounds to review?!?!  But hey, with bad weather keeping me indoors much more than I would like, what a great time to do some reading and start planning our summer camping trips. Right?

I will be doing a 3 part review of the book, and I invite you to read along and see if Washington really is the “Disney Land of American camping.”

Here is what he has to say about his adventure:

I am leaving on Feb. 11th for about 6 to 7 months. First stop will be LaPaz, Baja for 10 days of sea kayaking and photography with Gray Whales. Then 2 to 3 weeks on a sailboat for more photography. Then, I will be heading to Argentina for about 6 months. Working in collaboration with Fundacion Vida Sylvestre and Parques National, I will spend 6 months to photograph and report about endemic threatened and endangered species.

While I am out on expedition, I will post 2 to 4 entries per month. Each entry will be like the one posted last week on the Snowshoeing Trip, with photos/video/story (www.kontain.com/thewildimageproject). They will appear on Kontain, Planet Explore, iWend and Spot Adventure. A new website has been in the works www.thewildimageproject.com It acts like a console, where viewers can follow the expedition in almost real time. Each day will be tracked through Spot. Photos will be posted through Flickr and will feed the gallery. Videos will be posted on Vimeo and will appear on the site. Entries will be promoted through Twitter and Facebook.

Thank you very much ;-)

The Tundraline is a tent from Eureka’s Expedition & Outfitter series that is advertised by Eureka as “the ultimate canoe camping tent”     The Tundraline combines both “A” frame and tension suspension for strength and severe weather capability.  Like the rest of the Outfitter series, Tundraline is designed for four season usage.  Doublewall construction with 75D Stormshield polyester ripstop outer fly, with an inner wall 68D polyester taffeta combine for a one piece tent set up eliminating the need for an additional rain fly.

Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2010

January 23, 2010

Wrap up from the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2010

Check out the photos from the show: gallery

The 2010 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market comes to a close this past weekend after four great days (five if you include the All Mountain Demo) in Salt Lake City. The Outdoor Retailer trade show is aimed at industry retailers looking at all the new innovations in all things outdoor equipment from their potential suppliers. Attending as a member of the media certainly provides for a very different agenda on the show floor. I spent the last four days in Salt Lake City walking, and sometimes running to various meetings about every half-hour to see the newest products that the companies were unveiling for mainly Fall and Winter of 2010-2011 while including a lot of their spring merchandise as well. I previously mentioned a few of the companies I met with, but listing them all here would add a bit too much to this article. Every company I met, whether it was scheduled or drop-in, had some great innovations I’ve never seen before. I had to ask a few times, ‘Who came up with this idea?’ and the cool part, at times, was when the person would say, ‘Me.’

Whether it was JakPak’s all-in-one Jacket / Tent / Sleeping bag invention, Klymit’s Argon-Filled Kinetic vest, or Columbia’s tent-like Mobex trail pack, every company had something amazing to bring to the table this year. The show is not without free swag, too. Leesa certainly was right when she said before the show that I would receive a lot of socks, among other items. All I can say for all you consumers and enthusiasts out there is you should be very excited to see what’s coming and I can’t wait for most of it to hit the market. And that’s where we here at 4 All Outdoors come in. Our job is to review all this great new equipment and tell you how it worked for us in the great outdoors so you can have an easier time picking your next pack, trail-runners, tent, or outerwear.

This is going to be a very exciting year in store for all of us outdoor enthusiasts. Outdoor Retailer gave us industry insiders a sneak peek at what’s in store. I’m definitely looking forward to putting a lot of this gear through its paces and see what can hold up to my hobbies outdoors. Hope to see you all out on the trails!

-Dave

Sunday 1/24 early morning picture gallery update LINK

Updates from the Outdoor Retailer Show:

The Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2010 has gotten off to a great start. With over 900+ vendors in attendance, there is no shortage of eye-catching design and innovation. The Winter Market show mainly showcases product from suppliers arriving for the Fall 2010/2011 season, with many companies also demoing their Spring 2010 lines. While certain products definitely stand out from the crowd for being unique, Klymit’s Kinetic Argon Vests have jumped to the forefront of the show. The vest is one of Outdoor Retailer’s 44 featured products for Klymit’s usage of Noble Gasses, particularly Argon, in this application. The Argon gas doesn’t contain moisture when used to inflate the vest, providing a lightweight and warm insulation in a thin insulation laying vest Another piece that stood out for me from the design standpoint was Columbia’s Mobex Trail Pack. The pack immediately reminds me of a miniature tent worn on your back. The opening to the pack is actually zippered around the side resting on your back, giving the Mobex a very streamlined look. Columbia was also showcasing their new Omni Heat Thermal Reflective clothing line debuting Fall 2010. There are tons of great apparel offerings around the trade show and I stopped by to check out Loki’s evolving outerwear, incorporating their patented Mitt sleeve found on every jacket. There were some great new offerings from GoLite I saw during my meeting with them, and nice, new updated styles from the likes of Merrell and Ahnu. Check out the gallery for some pictures straight from the show floor.

Eureka Kaycee Update

January 20, 2010
I was hoping to get some cold weather testing conditions and sure enough, we had some of the coldest winter weather on record just recently.  I managed to go on a short overnighter on January 2, 2010. The skies were clear and it was 28 F at 3 pm when I hit a nearby trail. I hiked about 3 miles before stopping to set up camp. By this time it was around 5 PM and was already down to 22 F and was down to 17 F at around 9 PM when I went to sleep.  Since I turned in early I woke up for good at around 4:30 AM and got up at 5 AM to pack up.  It was now down to 14 F and my water bottles were frozen solid, actually they had been since around midnight. I was ready to get home and get a drink.

Kahtoola MICROspikes

January 20, 2010

By Jason B

Kahtoola MICROspikes on the 'rock' - Kodiak, Alaska

Kahtoola MICROspikes on a pair of trail shoes

Sometimes in the winter, I need serious traction, especially with the freeze/thaw cycles we see in the mountains here, but crampons are overkill.  I am hopeful that the Kahtoola MICROspikes will be able to fill this niche between standard traction devices and crampons.  The Kahtoola MICROSpikes are slip on traction devices that fit over most footwear.

Goodhhew Sedona Socks

January 14, 2010

I have a thing for socks, so I was pretty happy when provided  with an opportunity to try out the Sedona Crew

socks from Goodhew.    What drew me in, you might ask? The Alpaca!  Seriously. Alpaca is a wonderful natural fiber – it’s warm, soft, quite strong, and resistant to pilling or showing signs of wear.

Lorpen Primaloft Yarn – Light Hiker update

January 14, 2010
Lorpen socks in bootsI’ve used these socks for a few months now in some nice and not so nice weather.  The first several uses were during recumbent bike rides, day-hikes and a couple of short overnight hikes.  My shoes were usually either my trail runners or a light pair of boots.  And since the temperatures were not so cold, I wore them without any additional socks. I also wore them on a 14 mile kayaking trip under my waterproof pants and a pair of wading shoes.
-
Here lately I have worn them on several more day-hikes and on another short overnight hike when the temperatures were well below freezing.  I wore the Lorpen socks over a light weight liner sock.  I also used a much heavier and warmer boot, in fact, the boots pictured.  To read more click here.

Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Poles

January 14, 2010

~Steph

Over the last couple months, I’ve been using the Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking poles primarily in desert environments on hikes of varying duration from a short jaunt of a few miles longer days topping 10-miles.  The poles are comfortable in the hand, relatively light weight, and adjust very easily – though at first the flicklocks seemed stiff and a little reluctant to release, they’ve since loosened up nicely and are much more easy to use.  The pole tips seem to “grip” well without leaving obvious marks and they don’t seem to skitter around on rocky surfaces.

CyFi wireless speaker (Continued)

January 11, 2010

By Suzanne

It has been quite a few months since my last post about my beloved CyFi. What is the CyFi? Well, my friend, it is this iPod users favorite accessory. The CyFi is a wireless speaker system designed to be used with an iPod or, if you buy a different model, any bluetooth accessory. So, for those of you that cannot live without your tunes when you are off exploring, this thing is a must have gadget. Now, I’m the first to admit that I LOVE gadgets. Combine them with outdoor activities and that, my friend, is a match made in heaven.
