Living in Maine makes for some looong, snowy winters. Boredom can creep in and lead to cabin fever. A few years back, I started snowshoeing, and discovered that it not only gets me out of the house and from getting cabin fever, it is also great exercise.

Misty Day on Old Woman
I have used the Dakine Havoc baselayers multiple times over the past several months. I carried the baselayers on dayhikes, a backpacking trip, walking to work, and while hunting. Temperatures have ranged from the 50’s F to 20’s F, winds have varied from calm to in excess of 40 miles per hour and elevation ranged from sea level to 2500 feet or so. All of my use took place on Kodiak Island on our local mountains where trails are mostly non existent.

Honey Stinger recently sent me a bunch of their new, smaller 10g Protein bars and their Organic Energy Chews. The new 10g size of their popular 20g bar is ideal as a delicious meal-replacement snack while enjoying any activity and most people will agree that for some unknown reason, smaller sized bars taste better than their larger counterparts. While everyone has their own preference of taste, I’ve had my share of energy and protein bars over the years and I can easily say these Honey Stinger flavor offerings are the tastiest I’ve ever had.

I’ve been wearing the Ryder Swerve Pro’s for almost three months now, mostly while driving, kayaking and bike riding. I’ve used them less while out hiking but did find I needed them a on a few sunny days after the leaves were off. I also needed them on a recent hike with snow on the ground.

I found the sunglasses very comfortable to wear due to the light weight frame. I never had any trouble with them slipping off my face, not even down my nose. They also afforded an excellent view when riding in shady areas as they are not too dark. To read the rest of the review along with the update click here.

After three months I have learned some new lessons about trail cooking and trusting a simple, yet well constructed cook system on the trail. It has been a cold and nasty winter in Texas, but the Caldera Keg – H Cook System has opened my eyes to being more efficient about cooking

After two months with this knife I am more concerned about one of my fishing buddies swiping it than it not doing its job. Time and time again I have heard the comment “Use my knife, don’t get your fancy one dirty cutting bait or cleaning fish.” I have to agree with them, the Benchmade Griptilian 551 H20 Knife is fancy, but it is also meant for serious use.

If you watched any of the 2008 Olympic beach volleyball tournament in Beijing, you are probably at least slightly familiar with Kerri Walsh. When I saw her playing, I noticed the tape she was wearing on her shoulder (the commentators mentioning it every 5 seconds helped). I was curious and learned it was Kinesology Therapeutic Tape. I invite you to follow along with me over the next 3 months as I review this product and see how it works on my broken down ’40 something’ body. I apologize in advance that the tape will not look anywhere as good on me as it does on Kerri!

I think I am in love with a pair of sandals. Strangely enough it is winter time in Texas and I am still wearing the Chaco Z1/Unaweep Sandals and enjoying them.

One of the jackets I will be testing this winter is the Canada Goose Resolute Parka. It is described on their website as “A super cold-weather, thigh-length parka with a removable coyote fur ruff developed for industrial or commercial work in cold regions.” The jacket’s appearance certainly looks built for industrial or commercial work, but I think it can function well in outdoors through hiking and camping, or at least that’s my plan.
