Last Look at the i360

March 9, 2010

Introduced by Suzanne

After having my fun time with the i360, my 20-something sister got her hands on it before we went out for a hike. Not wanting to spoil her fun, I let her give it a go to see what she thought of it. Obviously, I have yet to get it back! Apparently she’s having too much fun with it and has used her “I’m you sister” card with this one and claimed dibs. Although I might steal it back from her the next time I catch it off her head, I told her she had to tell us about it if she wanted to use it.

Dakine Comet Method Women's Gloves

March 9, 2010

Written by Suzanne

I don’t know about the rest of the ladies out there, but I had to say that I have spent far too long being frustrated by the pure lack of awesome women’s outdoor gloves that actually can withstand a beating. If I can find a pair that fit, more often than not, they wear out so soon after buying them that I’m left cursing on the side of a mountain with cold, wet hands. Or, if all else fails, I’m stuck wearing men’s gloves that work just fine, but aren’t exactly what I wanted. I want something that fits my wrists snuggly so that snow doesn’t invade. And a fit that doesn’t make me feel like when I put on my dad’s gloves when I was growing up. Oh, and, if it isn’t too much to ask, I’d like to keep some sense of style while keeping my fingers toasty. Is that really too much to ask?

Dakine says it isn’t and they set out to prove it to me. Check out what I have to say about the Dakine Comet Method Women’s Gloves by clicking here!

Fun At The Glacier Outdoor Center

March 5, 2010

by: Dave D’Abate

View Across Lake McDonald

Glacier National Park in Montana is celebrating its Centennial year in 2010 and the summer season will certainly packed with the park’s nearly 2 million annual visitors. Few visitors enjoy the crowding and noise levels in wilderness areas during the peak season. The best time to get out and experience Glacier Natl. Park is during the off-season when there are no crowds, and you’re unlikely to see more than a dozen people at any given time while on the trails.

Glacier Natl. Park is more than one million acres, and with nearly 800 miles of trail, deciding what landmarks to see can be a daunting task. This is where the Glacier Outdoor Center comes in. The Glacier Outdoor Center has been operating in and around Glacier Natl. Park since 1976 and is celebrating their 35th anniversary in 2010 along-side the park’s Centennial.

Tents for Haiti

March 5, 2010

In response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12, 2010, Kelty has donated almost 300 tents to help provide temporary shelter for families and individuals left homeless in the quake’s aftermath.

With help from Jenny Dubin (a volunteer who donated countless hours of her own time to help with earthquake relief), Partners in Health (an organization that brings modern medical care to poor communities around the world), and the Clinton Foundation, Kelty was able to donate and send tents to Port-au-Prince and other Haitian communities where they were needed most.

“Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated employees and the strength of Kelty as a brand, we were in a position to lend a helping hand to those affected by the recent earthquake in Haiti,” said Kenny Ballard, president of Kelty.  “It’s our hope that this small donation will provide some much needed relief and restore some hope in the people of Haiti.”

Thanks to efforts by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of Haiti, Kelty’s donated tents have been distributed to parts of the country most in need.  Several of these tents have been used to set up a village providing temporary shelter for 750-800 children who lost one or more parents in the quake.

The tragedy is Haiti is far from over and additional help is still needed.  For more information on how to get involved, please visit Jenny Dubin’s Partners in Health web page.

A Final Look at the CyFi

March 4, 2010

In this review, I’m going to take one last look at the cyfi, which is an awesome wireless speaker that you can connect to your iPod or, with a different cyfi model, to any bluetooth device. The past few months with the cyfi have been an absolute blast and I love being able to take my tunes with me wherever I go without being antisocial by using headphones. Want to learn more? Then click here to see the video review on this great speaker system.

MSR Lightining Ascent Snowshoes update

March 2, 2010

MSR Lightning Ascent SnowshoesSomehow, I totally ticked off Mother Nature! This past summer I tested some rain gear and found it so hard to get rained on I took to running up into the mountains every time there was thunder storms predicted…yea, unlucky AND not too bright. Well after one of the earliest snowfalls I can recall, I chose to test snowshoes…you guessed it, snow everywhere but the Pacific Northwest! It took some work but I did get some opportunities to use these. So I invite you to read the second installment of my MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoes.

The Mobex is an intriguing new day pack from Columbia Sportswear.  At first glance, it looks like a wee tent, mounted on a pack harness – but that’s part of its ingenuity. Intrigued? Come learn more here.

Brooks-Range Elephant Foot 15 F sleeping bag

March 1, 2010

The Brooks-Range Elephant Foot sleeping bag is a sleeping bag that looks like a mummy bag that is missing the top end where the shoulder area and then hood are usually located.  And thus the use of a separate top (a hooded down jacket is ideal) is needed to complete the sleeping system.  The idea being, if you are packing a good warm jacket, then why not use it as part of the sleeping system and save weight on the sleeping bag.  The bag features 800 fill down, and the shell and liner are made with a breathable, water-resistance fabric. Anyways, besides the potential weight savings, there is one more reason I am ecstatic at the prospect of using the Brooks-Range Elephant Foot bag.  I use a hammock most of the time and getting in and out of a tight fitting mummy bag is not the easiest thing in the world. I have already tried the elephant foot one night in my hammock and I can safely say, getting in and out of it is a breeze.
