Just wanted to post a quick note on the Alpini Bivy. Weather and personal obligations have prevented me from getting much use out of the bivy. Since I have a climb of Mt Adams scheduled for July 8-10 I will be postponing my third and final update until after that trip. I am really looking forward to the weight savings of using this bivy and a tarp in place of my tent or old bivy.

Because in the past month, we have had an above average rainfall, I have worn the Blood’N Guts shirt primarily off-trail. I have worn it almost everyday except when I was working on roofing my house. To read more.

The Sherpa Adventure Gear Tashi Mock Neck sweater is unique in many ways. First, Sherpa Adventure Gear manufactures all their apparel in Nepal, so every purchase goes toward supporting the local economy of Nepal. From Sherpa Adventure Gear’s website,
Sherpa Adventure Gear has partnered with Alpine Ascents to donate up to $.50 for every item sold to The Sherpa Education Fund … we are also in the process of setting up additional non-profit partnerships to benefit the health, education, and welfare of underprivileged Sherpa children. In addition to this, we employ local Sherpas in our office in Katmandu, and contract with Sherpa artisans (some of whom are our own cousins) to create our beautiful, hand-made wool hats. So every product you buy makes a direct impact on the lives of these amazing people.

Ladies if you like capri pants take a look at the Outdoor Research Solitaire Capri Pants. These pants have a medium rise and taper nicely through the thighs. They are made of a soft, brushed, quick-drying, lightweight Supplex nylon that has UPF 30+ protection and a DWR finish to shed light moisture.

During this period I used the Acadia for going to meetings and short hikes. Going to meetings is a lot better without having a waist belt. There is a lot less space available at meetings and the extra straps tend to get in the way. To read more.

Well it is not summer yet, according to the calendar, and despite living in a “desert” it has been cold and rainy. So I guess I could not have gotten much use out of a pair of flip-flops right? WRONG! I have taken to wearing them every chance I get – around the yard, around the neighborhood, and around town. I have added the second of 3 installments to my review of these sandals, and I invite you to read it here…

The Kombi Technical Base Layer comes in a 1-5 rating system depending on temperature and activity. I received the # 5 barrier weight base layer which is advertised to be the most versatile weight. When I tried it on I was pleasantly surprised with how it formed to my body and provides ease with movement. It is designed with many great features to keep you dry, warm, and comfortable.

I do not wear hats so how could I say no to something that is not a hat, especially the Insect Shield UV Buff? It is most definitely not a hat and it promises to keep the summer bugs off of me, which is just another lure to a guy like me. You can read more about the arrival of the Insect Shield UV Buff here…

It is the end of the line for the Oboz Contours here in Texas. After three months I cannot say that I have sworn off boots forever, but the Contours sure put a dent in my faith in boots. The last three months have been a learning experience and you can find out just how much I learned here …..

I have used the bag two more nights since my last update. The temperatures have remained warm, too warm in fact for a bag with no zipper or way to vent at the foot end. The lowest temperature I encountered during this last phase was 59 F on May 17th, followed by 66 F on June the 4th. But in a way, I consider this good news as it reflects on just how effective a sub 1 lb sleeping bag (remember mine weighted in at 14 oz) can be. The one saving grace in using the bag on these rather warm nights is that I could use a very light jacket. To read the rest of the review please click here.

Now in its 3rd generation and updated for 2010, Osprey’s Aether series backpack offers a lightweight custom fit for every outdoor enthusiast. After owning a 2nd generation Aether 60 for four years now, I was pretty excited to test the new Aether and see the differences in the 2010 line. The awesome folks at Osprey sent me a Magma colored Aether 85 to put through its paces this spring.

While I may not be writing much more about the Osprey Elroy messenger bag, I do know that it will continue to travel to and from work with me. The fact that this bag is made almost entirely from recycled materials only adds to its appeal in my view. Read more about this amazing bag here…
