A still photograph from taking the Aquapac camera case for a swim with my dog.

For my second installment of my Aquapac camera case review, I decided to take the case along for a swim in the local river while teaching my young dog to swim to see just how well the photographs and video would come out. Curious to find out? Well, I am sharing the footage with you to see for yourself! To see the footage and hear about my experience with the Aquapac camera case so far, click here.

The Final Look at the Oboz Hardscrabbles……….

August 25, 2010

Danielle Denton

I used my Hardscrabbles in Moab again and went on some fantastic rappels and hiking through rivers.  They were great and for my first review item I couldn’t have been more impressed with how they performed and really lived up to what was displayed on the site.  They are well made and built for both light and vigorous activities.  People from all walks of life can find a good use for these shoes.

Surviving with the Buff

August 25, 2010

This has been a long hot summer here in Texas.  While I suffered through a severe winter, I had been very hopeful that the long hard freezes in this area would mean a severe decline in the biting bug population, but I was wrong.

The mosquitoes are out in full force as are the flies, but I had the Insect Shield UV Buff to protect me. Read more here

Nature’s Coffee Kettle

August 25, 2010
Nature's Coffee Kettle

Nature's Coffee Kettle

By Suzanne

Anyone who knows me in real life knows that I am a coffee addict. I could drink it morning, noon, and night and not have enough. So, when Nature’s Coffee Kettle sent me two “kettles” of their product, I was pretty jazzed. The Coffee Kettle is just what the name says except that it’s in bag form. Instead of reaching for your brewing contraptions in the morning, all you need is just one Nature’s Coffee Kettle and hot water. From there, the directions are easy. According to the back of the of the “kettle”, you simply open the top of the zip pouch, slowly pour in 4 cups of hot water, and then wait 30 seconds for it to brew. Then you have freshed brew joe in it’s own “kettle” that you can serve from simply by opening the spout and carefully pouring it in to your favorite mug. That’s it. It’s that easy.

Harold Parker State forest

In this period the temperatures were consistently over 80 F and the humidity was always very high.  Aside from using the Tilley daily, I was on a hike in Harold Parker State Forest, attended the Lowell Folk Festival from its start on Friday till the end on Sunday, and backpacked on the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail and Jackson New Hampshire.

OR Show update #3

August 6, 2010

Another exciting day at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City!  So many cool, useful, fun and VERY innovative things this year.    Crescent Sock Company make super comfy socks, made in Tennessee.  The shape of the sock is unusual for a sock – but just like a foot! The heal and toe box are shaped like a person’s foot. I wore them all day, and my feet cried less than usual after walking more than 17 miles!

CamelBak Antidote 70 oz

CamelBak Antidote 70 oz (photo courtesy of CamelBak)

CamelBak has some great new hydration items coming out.  Two standouts – the Antidote is the newly redesigned resevoir with some innovations that are ‘smart’ for sure.  A wide port for easy filling, its baffled for a lower profile and my favorite – integrated dryer arms that fold out from behind the fill port, opening the reservoir for a complete air dry.

The CamelBak Groove

The CamelBak Groove

The other product from CamelBak that I really liked was a new water bottle, the Groove, with a built in filter.  Easy to carry, easy to clean, and good tasting water on the go.  Great for travel or hiking!

A really innovative change, is the Kilo tent from Easton Mountain Products.  It actually weighs just under a kilo!  One of the big changes is to the poles – no more shock cords!  Instead they use the new AirLock™ connectors that replace heavier shock corded systems.

Mountain Khakis Snake River convertible pants a last look

August 4, 2010
Fox Brook tent site on Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail

Fox Brook tent site on Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail

I have used the Mountain Khakis Snake River pants almost daily since my last report. They have been washed several times and all stains have been removed successfully. There was a reddish brown stain that I had no idea where it came from and was concerned that it would remain. It came out in the wash and I was relieved. The weather since the last report has been in the 80 F to 95 F range with the humidity over 80 % most of the time. During this period I went on a 3 day backpack and attended the 3 day Lowell Folk festival.

Outdoor Retailer update

August 4, 2010

WOW!!  We are seeing some great, innovative gear this summer!  Lots of different types of charging devices – both solar and kinesthetic – great for when you need to recharge a camera, gps or smartphone while outdoors.   www.nPowerPEG.com is the source for the nPower PEG kinesthetic device (along with some great info about it, and its developer).

Active Boomer

Aging...the ultimate extreme sport

A really ‘fun’ line of shirts and hats, for us ‘Boomers’ is www.activeboomer.com. I loved their slogan ‘ Be Active. Stay Active. Embrace Aging’.

Keen

Fast Trail (top) and Tryon (bottom) styles

Keen has some really impressive new designs out.  Two new styles are the Fast Trail, and the Tryon.  Lighter in weight, they both will be available in men’s and women’s versions.  Keen has committed to deepening and expanding their goal of a ‘Hybrid Life’ and you can see it in their new triangular shoeboxes, and especially in the philosophy and attitudes of the company.

If you’ve read the site for long, you know I love things that do double duty.  Well, Solhuma makes a great backpacking stove called ‘Vital’  that burns wood.  No fuel to carry, just fold it up and put it in your pack.  BUT- if you are camping, or want a bit more in the way of cooking options, you can add a component to it (with more to come) that turns it into a grill.   I can’t wait to try it out.  I tasted some bacon cooked on it, and YUM!
