A Bright Idea…

November 30, 2010

~ Leesa

I recently received a Petzl CORE rechargeable battery for review purposes.  I had seen a demonstration at the Summer Outdoor Retailer Show in August, and was very intrigued.

The charger is programmable to control brightness and battery life.   This little piece of technology is easy to use, but may be a bit harder to explain.  I plan on using it, and sharing actual usage information, and screen shots to illustrate how it works.

Columbia Bugathermo Techlite boots

November 25, 2010
Review by Arnie P
Bugathermo Techlite boots

Bugathermo Techlite boots

Columbia Bugathermo Techlite boots were provided by Columbia for the purpose of this review.
These boots are deceiving in many ways. Looking at the boot, I could not believe they weigh as little as they do. Each boot weights about 1.5 lb. I have trail shoes that weigh about 1 lb each. These boots are waterproof and are thermally heated with rechargeable batteries. The boots I am testing are a men’s size 9. The boots are about 9.25 inches high. The laces pass through 5 pairs of nylon loops at the lower end and 2 pairs of plastic hinged hooks at the top end. The laces also pass thru a center nylon loop keeping the laces well dressed to the boot. The length of the laces seems perfect. Many times I find my laces are too long and I must tie extra knots to prevent the laces from getting under my feet. I like that the boots have a tab loop on the heel end to help put them on.  To read more.

Tilley Tec-wool cap update

Tilley Tec-Wool cap front view

Tilley Tec-wool cap provided for the purpose of this review.

This past month has passed by especially fast for me with temperatures ranging from highs in the lower 70′s to lows below freezing. I have managed to wear the Tec-wool cap almost every day of this period and my head has been comfortable as I encountered the different temperatures while going from inside to outside and then into a car that had been heated by the sun. This experience has made me a believer of the claim that this cap has temperature control.  To read more.

Aladdin 16 oz. To-Go-Tumbler

November 15, 2010

When I think of Aladdin products I usually think of insulated thermos

Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler

Aladdin 16 oz. To-Go-Tumbler

bottles. So when the opportunity to test the Aladdin 16 oz. To-Go-Tumbler came along I had to first go see exactly what one was.  Then I asked myself, what would I need one for, I mean after all, it looks pretty much like most of the plastic glasses (an oxymoron if there ever was one) sitting in my kitchen cabinet..  But now that I have my hands on the Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler I have to say it looks like a very useful item. Out Of The Blue Sunglasses

November 15, 2010

by Chris Rapchick

Sunglasses were provided by Out Of The Blue Eyewear for review
purposes.

As a fisherman, I find polarized sunglasses to be a necessity. They are almost as important as my favorite rod and reel or my overflowing tackle bag
for a successful day on the water. I tend to be rough on my equipment
and since I fish in saltwater, my gear sees quite a bit of abuse
from the elements too. Needless to say, I’ve been through my fair
share of sunglasses and have pretty high standards when it comes to
the all too important optics for fishing. Whether it be, taking the
glare off the water to see fish, shielding my eyes from splashing
saltwater while running in 3 ft seas, keeping the sun out of my eyes
while tossing grubs, or just plain looking cool, sunglasses are a key
factor for my fishing experience.

I recently received a pair of Out Of The Blue Sunglasses to review and
have already fallen in love with them.  The Marauder Polarized glasses
have been wonderful to wear, especially while fishing.  These glasses
boast a strong polycarbonate frame and tough metal hinges. A part of
the Signature Collection, these frames come in tortoise, black or
white with scratch resistant polycarbonate lenses with maximum UVA/B
protection.  The polarization of the lenses is another big plus as it
allows wearers to see through the suns glare.

I have fished hard the past three days with these sunglasses and have
been extremely impressed with them thus far.  The polarization of the
lenses took the glare off the water, allowing me to see fish and
underwater structure that some of my fishing partners could not see.
The ability to see the structure and the fish near the surface helped
me to catch more fish, which, of course, is the ultimate goal of any
fisherman.  I also am a fan of the metal hinges on the frames as they
are more resilient than standard built in hinges.  The metal and
saltwater may not mix well, but I will touch on that in future
reviews.  With the polycarbonate scratch resistant lenses, I feel
confident that they can take whatever abuse I can throw at them,
especially the grit of the sand and saltwater.  The polycarbonate
frames seem pretty strong and resilient to abuse, however, I noticed
that when I put my floating neoprene strap on the arms, they slid
right off.  I fixed this by putting some tape around the ends of the
arms, giving the neoprene strap something to hold onto.  These glasses
should be a pleasure to fish with.

These sunglasses from Out Of The Blue have a comfortable feel, stylish
look and strong construction.  From my first time looking at them out
of the box, till wearing them as I write this review, I have been
impressed with these sunglasses.  With a pricetag that won’t break the
bank, you’re getting a great product that you’ll enjoy wearing.  If
you are looking for a quality pair of shades, I’d recommend looking
into the sunglass selection offered by Out Of The Blue Eyewear

Be sure to check back in a month to see how they’re holding up!

Polarmax PMX TransDry Baselayer

November 14, 2010

by: Dave D’Abate

Polarmax TransDry

Wicking cotton? Yes, that’s right, you read it correctly. Finally wicking cotton is a reality for every outdoor enthusiast. Polarmax, a company that has been making performance baselayers for more than 35 years has joined in partnership with Cotton Incorporated to create the first wicking cotton apparel. TransDry is guaranteed to be more breathable and dry faster than its competing synthetic styles.  Polarmax and Cotton Incorporated achieve this breakthrough fabric by using a half-treated, half-untreated thread that is interwoven to create the fabric.  Where the untreated thread retains the ability to absorb moisture over a large surface area, the treated thread resists water retention, helping the moisture to spread farther across the fabric and dry quickly.

My fascination with Titanium products was rekindled 4 years ago when I returned to backpacking. I did some research and found a lot to like about Titanium. It is very strong for its weight. It is toxic free. The metal is non porous and does not scratch easily. Most of all it is easy to clean.

A final look at the Mountainsmith Lookout 45 backpack

November 7, 2010

The summer heat wave finally broke enough for some good hiking.  In fact, it

Lookout 45 from the rear

View of Lookout 45 from the rear

has been a little chilly lately, or as I like to call it, “perfect hiking weather”.  I have still only managed overnight hikes with this pack, but my last hike was 9 miles total with 7 of the 9 miles the following morning in one six hour hike.  The hike saw a low of 39 F and a high of 50 F.  It rained lightly several times and even sleeted a few minutes a couple of times. So how did the Lookout 45 perform? To read the rest of the update along with the entire review please click here.

Hiking San Francisco

Those Redwoods Sure are Heavy!

Places to hike in the San Francisco area, by guest writer Alex Genadinik.

Where to Hike in and Around San Francisco

San Francisco and the Bay Area are known to have great outdoors unlike any other place in the world.  One big reason that accounts for many of the unique qualities of northern California nature is its proximity to the Pacific Ocean.  Most places in the world have a dry season where there is almost no rain that brings moisture to the vegetation.  While the Bay Area also has a pretty long dry season, the fog that comes in from the ocean provides enough moisture to help the giant redwood trees and many other plants to thrive throughout the Bay Area.

Here are some great outdoor spots to hike and experience when visiting San Francisco and Bay Area.  Read the rest of the article.

Princeton Tec Push bike light

November 2, 2010

Reviewed by Coy StarnesPrinceton Tec Push mounted on my road bike

Light supplied for review purposes by Princeton Tec

Briefly, the Princeton Tec Push features a single Maxbright  LED in a very compact unit that weighs in at only 115 grams (4.06 oz).  The light output seems very bright, and according to Princeton Tec it is rated at 100 lumens.  It is powered by 3 AAA batteries (supplied) and boast a burn time of 63 hours, but this is while using the flash setting (more on this later).  Mounting is accomplished with a very sturdy looking clamp that will make installing the light a breeze and also make swapping the light from one bike to another very easy to do.  To read the rest of the review please click here.
