Sierra Designs has introduced a very unique utilization of body mapping technology to create the Solar Fusion down jacket. Designed primarily as a ski jacket, the Solar Fusion down jacket features down-filled pockets placed in mapped positions on the interior of the jacket to eliminate cold spots.
As stated on Sierra Designs’ website,
The Solar Fusion jacket unites the apex of materials and technology. Three-layer TropozoneTM offers complete weather protection while Core Comfort TechnologyTM provides pockets of 800-fill goose down placed strategically throughout. FusonicTM construction provides exceptional durability so no matter what the conditions are outside, you will be ready to conquer any challenge!

The Sierra Designs Gnar jacket could be considered more of a down sweater but with its 800-fill down insulation, it will keep you warmer than heavier, lower fill power jackets. For a minimalist, ultralight jacket, the Gnar also packs in a few features that sets it apart from other similar puffies. The Gnar jacket, according to Sierra Designs, is; The perfect go-to jacket for chilly Fall weather, this versatile 800 fill goose down jacket provides the comfort of down insulation. A great layering piece this stylish jacket is also comfortable just cruising around town. The Gnar jacket fits very well and is comfortable to wear to the point of not wanting to take it off.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”
But what if you first attempt turns out a wonderful product? I received a new hydration daypack from Platypus. And my initial impression is that they just might have hit a homerun. This looks to be a well designed and constructed pack. I invite you to read my initial review of this product at the below link and return in a month when I will post the 2nd part of this 3 part review.

Ever worried that your small electronics such as your cell phone or digital camera will be exposed to the elements while on your latest adventure? Tired of having to lug around a soggy wallet after it got wet on your last hike? Afraid that those sandwich bags you are using to keep things dry on the trail just won’t cut it? Aquapac has created the Small Stormproof Pouch to keep your small items dry and safe while you are in the great outdoors. Click here to see my review of the product.

It has been slightly over a month and I have had 2 occasions to use the Steripen Sidewinder in New Hampshire. One the the things I have always liked about the forest and mountains of New Hampshire is the abundance of fast moving cold water that flows in the streams.

Aquapac 25 L Wet & Dry viewed from behind
I was excited when offered a chance to test the Aquapac 25L Wet & Dry backpack. I have used an Aquapac phone pouch for several years now and it has always kept my phone dry so I felt I could trust my camping gear to the same manufacture. The bag fastens with the proven roll-top design. To read the rest of the review please click here.

Brunton Restore, Image courtesy of Brunton
For my final update I’d like to sum what I have learned while using the Restore. But first of all, I have a confession to make. No matter how simple something is to operate, I can usually find a way to mess up, and I did. And that leads to an important aspect of using any gear. Read the manual enough to memorize its use or be ready to go back and review it ever so often. I’ll get into what went wrong in a minute so please keep in mind as you read the following that the problem I was having was all my fault. When used correctly the Restore has always been up to the job. To read the rest of the update please click here.
