Aquapac 25L Wet & Dry Update

June 30, 2011
phone and knife carry method

phone and knife carry method

So far I’ve been using the Aquapack mostly as a day hiking pack, but I did use it when riding my bike several times.  The hikes were anywhere from 2 to 5 miles long and the longest bike ride was 23 miles.   On one ride, I was taking some letters up to the post office and weighed the pack while I was there.  I knew it was pretty light, but  now I know it weighs 1 lb 8 oz.  On this particular trip I ended up riding 15 miles total and it got up to 86 F.  I found my back did sweat a little under the pack but I really didn’t notice it while riding.  To read the rest of the update please click here.

I consider the Icebreaker Rhythm Jersey to be a keeper in my cycling jersey collection. Not only does it look great, but it is super comfortable. It has been worn the past month one to three days a week while road biking.

Wolverine Compass Boot Update

June 22, 2011

I have now worn these boots enough to make a few observations.  The first one would have to be that these are extremely comfortable boots.  I had absolutely no problems with break in, which I have experienced with several other boots I have worn over the years.  Not that the other boots did not turn out to be very comfortable, but I don’t like having to suffer through weeks of discomfort like I have before.  I also found that despite being pretty big boots, I have not felt clumsy in them. Clumsy might not be the exact word I’m hunting but what I mean is that the boots are similar in feeling to wearing much smaller trail runners.  To read the rest of the update please click here.

Echo II set up in my back yard

The origin of this article began when I wrote an article called “Taking the load off your back”.  The reason to lighten my load is explained in the previous article and, being a medical issue, it would only go away by my carrying a lighter load.

Update: Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Trekker

June 22, 2011
NeoAir Trekker

Photo obtained from the manufacturer's website.

The NeoAir Trekker was used while camping for two nights in Southern Utah near St. George. The temperatures during the night were on the mild side; in the upper 50′s and low 60′s F. I was not cold from the ground beneath me and my core stayed warm, so I was a happy camper. I am actually quite surprised how small the Trekker packs down and how comfortable it was while sleeping on hard, dirt packed ground (in my tent of course).

Aquapac Small Stormproof Pouch-Update #1

June 19, 2011

The Stormproof Pouch has accompanied myself on every outdoors outing that I have made in the past month.  Aquapac has created a small waterproof dry sack that keeps your small gear safe from the elements and lets you rest easy that no water will touch what is inside.

Check my latest update to see why I am beginning to believe that the Aquapac Stormproof Pouch is a very welcome companion for all of my outdoor adventures.  Click here to see my update on the Pouch.

Final Update: Osprey Verve 7

June 17, 2011

Osprey Verve Bungee In UseI am still enjoying the Osprey Verve 7 for mountain biking and short day hikes. I enjoy it so much that I wish I had a few more sizes to replace the other packs that I own. The pack has been worn while mountain biking for short rides lasting about an hour to rides that were over four hours in length. The Verve was also used on short day hikes under 8 miles.

Check out my final thoughts here.

Benchmade 551H20 side view with clip showing

I have been carrying the Benchmade 551H20 Griptilian almost daily for the past month and a half. I have used it for a lot of menial chores such as peeling an apple, opening boxes, sharpening pencils or cleaning under my fingernails. And no, I did not wash it after cleaning under my finger nails and later peeling an apple, but I haven’t noticed any serious health issues from the practice. Site Changes…

June 16, 2011

Hello to all our readers,

Welcome to summer 2011!  Seems summer has arrived in the northeast finally.  We’ll be bringing you new articles and gear reviews along with a revamped forum, and a contest or two.  Our writers are busy outdoors, as I hope you all are also.  What are your favorite things to do?  I’m hoping to get in some more paddling this summer, along with more remote camping.

I’ve added some advertisers links in the side column, and hope if you are shopping, you’ll check them out.  We do not accept advertisements from companies we are doing gear reviews for, or their competitors. Any possible income from the links will be used to pay for hosting of the website.

I am curious – what types of articles or reviews interest you all?  Leave a comment please…

hiking along snowmobile trail in New Hampshire

Life always has surprises and shortly after I finished my last report, I discovered the Aquapac is quite different from other dry sacs I have used.  I noticed that there is a seal similar to the seals on Zip lock bags located just below the regular seal.  It was time to start using the Aquapac.  To read more.

Walking Barefoot? Here’s a Euro for Your Troubles

June 14, 2011

I received a pair of  PUR Euros for review purposes, and they claim they are like walking barefoot.  I’m going to see about

PUR Euro shoe

Euro in Dark Roast, photo courtesy of manufacturer

that!  I’ve always loved going barefoot in the summer, but find that its just not a good idea in some places.  So, these are going to get a work out after hiking or kayaking, especially around the campfire at night.

Seems a bit funny, as my only previous experience with Baffin footwear is a pair of super winter boots.

The next step in my trying out the Alpine blanket was to go on a series of one night local backpacks.  Since my last report, I bought a Therm-A-Rest Z light pad.  I now had essentially 2 air pads and one Z foam pad all made by Therm-A-Rest.  I will now go into the differences I found while trying out the different sleeping pads.  To read more.

Osprey Hornet 32 Final Update

June 9, 2011

I recently took the Hornet 32 on a two day, 23 mile, overnight backpacking trip.  It was the perfect trip prior to wrapping up my final update on the pack. There are many products out there labeled “lightweight”, but I think that the Hornet 32 holds up to its lightweight label and performs well in a variety of settings and activities.  Check my final update on my experiences and thoughts on the Osprey Hornet 32 here.

Exchange 26 Duffle Put to the Test……..

June 7, 2011

Danielle Denton

I use my Exchange 26 every time I travel and I love it.  I was in dire need for a good, durable duffle to use for all my travels.  I tested it on a small SkyWest Jet, on my camping adventures, and everything in between.  I was happy to see that it fit pretty well in the overhead bin with some nice pushing and all my clothes stayed clean and unwrinkled.  The ID badge is easy to get to and you can register your bag to track your order in case of loss or theft.  It has great packing ability and heavy duty compression straps for a big load.

One last look…..Kombi Base Layer

June 7, 2011

Danielle Denton

The Kombi barrierweight base layer has been a great piece of clothing and has served its purpose during a large variety of activities.  When I wore it skiing I was well insulated and kept nice and cozy while up on the mountain.  It fit really well all throughout the time I was reviewing it and didn’t do any shrinking, fading, or discoloring.  I wore it on many adventures and wonderful hikes.

Gerber Metolius Pocket Folder Update

Gerber Metolius Open

The problem with a piece of equipment that does exactly what it is supposed to, and does it well is that it leaves reviewers like me with very little to say. And for me to be at a loss for words it a rare event indeed.
