Winter OR kicked off with the All Mountain Demo Day at Solitude Ski Resort outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mountain had fresh powder which made for good skiing and snowshoeing. I spent the day making turns and playing with new snowshoes at the demo day.
MSR had their full line up available. No significant changes to their line up, just minor tweaks on the binding for the Revo Explore bindings pictured below.
I also had the chance to use snowshoes from a company from Norway called Fibulvetr. Their snowshoes are molded plastic and come in several sizes. The Rangr is pictured below.
Crescent Moon also has new snowshoes on the way made completely of EVA – all foam. They were interesting to say the least and super light.
Yukon Charlie also debuted new emergency inflatable snowshoes. They look really neat and only weigh 2 pounds. These would be a great addition to an emergency kit on a snow machine.
In addition to snowshoes there were several new models of traction devices. Stabil has a new product that features aggressive traction.
Yaxtrax also has a new traction system that features a boa lacing system.
I also checked out a few cool new items at the Media Preview on the evening. Altra has a new trail shoe that offers more cushion than the Lone Peak but less than the Olympus. Looks like a good shoe.
There was also a cool new light system by Hydra Light. The battery is charged via dipping it for 10 seconds in salt water. They offer several different products from lanterns to flashlights
