The Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 Bottle is a new product from GSI Outdoors. This vacuum bottle is marketed as being lightweight and packable. Upon receiving the bottle I was immediately impressed how lightweight it actually was. The bottle holds 17 fl. oz. and weighs a light 7.9 oz. (per the manufacture and this is a verified weight) including the lid. It is made of 18/8 stainless steel and comes with a flip top cap that opens with a push button and locks when closed to prevent leaking and spillage. This bottle has a 2 mm wall that makes it thinner than some of the plastic bottles on the market. It is also designed to be 1/3 lighter than traditional stainless bottles. Even though the Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 bottle is thin it is marketed to keep beverages hot or cold for 8 hours. That of course will need some further research on my end. However, this all sounds pretty good to me. The dimensions of the bottle per the manufacturer are 2.90 inches x 2.90 inches x 9.20 inches. The bottom of the bottle is rubberized to protect the surface the bottle rests on and maybe to aide in prevention of the bottle sliding on a surface.
Inside of the bottle was an instruction/care booklet written in various languages. The enclosed literature indicated that the bottle needs to be primed for the first use. This is done by filling the bottle with hot (for hot beverages) or cold water (for cold beverages) for five minutes. There are also instructions on how to clean stains from the stainless steel with baking soda, general cleaning, and separation of the O-ring/lid spout/stopper seal for each cleaning.
The care instructions are to hand wash with mild detergent in hot water after use. It is best to use non-abrasive cleaning products. It is not for use with carbonated beverages, warm milk, or baby food. It is not recommended to use bleach, ammonia cleaners or to place the bottle in the dishwasher, on the stove, or in the microwave. It is also indicated to not fill the bottle above the neck, inspect the seals for wear, and to be sure to tighten the lid and lock it.
The lid is easily popped open by sliding the lock upward and then pressing the release button. I found that the lid does not release down while I was taking a drink from the bottle. The bottle is closed by pressing the lid down, hearing a click, and then by sliding the lock downward. The bottle has a nice sleek look by having a smooth finish and there is also a nice added detail of the GSI Outdoors logo on the exterior. I found the slender design makes it easy for me to grasp the bottle in my small hands.
GSI Outdoors guarantees against defects (material and workmanship) for a lifetime. However, it is up to the discretion of GSI the replacement or repair of the item in question.
Update October 1, 2016
Well I have been using the Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 Bottle for just over a month. Let me say this bottle rocks. It is so lightweight I cannot believe it. It is so slender that it fits comfortably in my hand. Best of all it kept my beverages cold over 8 hours. There is no odd taste to my water and the bottle looks pretty good too.
During various times in the night (when I should be sleepy) I wake up thirsty. The Microlite 500 was convenient to have on the nightstand and get a cold drink. I also use the bottle daily at work. I fill it with ice, cold water and there is not a time that the water gets warm before I fill the bottle again. I do wish the bottle were a tad larger as I am refilling it frequently and on a quick hike after work I need just a few more ounces to be satisfied.
Here is the best thing about this bottle…I was mountain biking in temperatures over 90 degrees and I was exhausted. On the trail I remember leaving my bottle in the car, but I was not anticipating the water to still be cold since it was in my car for hours before I began mountain biking. I got to my car and the inside was so hot. Metal was hot to touch, but the Microlite was not hot. The water was refrigerated cold and it was so refreshing. I could not believe the water stayed cold for six hours and three of which were in temperatures well over 100 degrees in my car. Water never tasted so good!
Now there is one peeve I have with this bottle. If some drops of water splash inside of the lid outside the drinking spout (on the outset rim) they will dribble out of the bottle when it is closed (the location of the drops of water can be seen in the photo). Otherwise there is no leakage, which is great.
I will admit I do not clean the bottle after every use or every day, maybe every other day. The bottle has been easy to clean with a sponge brush and I have not noticed any mold.
Now that it is getting cooler I will try hot beverages in the Microlite. Check back next month.
Final Update October 31, 2016
Another month has gone by and I have been using the GSI Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 Bottle almost every day. Since it has been cooler in the mornings I have been filling it with hot coffee or tea. My hot liquids have been staying warm for at least two hours. Most of the time I consume my tea or coffee before the two-hour mark. With a warm beverage inside of the bottle the outside is not hot to the touch. I noticed that there is no odd taste from the coffee or tea from being contained in the stainless bottle.
I found that I am washing the bottle every time after a hot beverage is placed inside. Honestly, if plain water is inside the bottle I wash it about twice a week. There has been no mold issues or no odd taste when not cleaning the bottle daily.
I am very happy with the Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 Bottle. I wish the bottle was available in more size options. Also I found the bottle not to leak if there is no remaining liquid outside the drinking spout. If there are any drops of water in that area they will drip out of the bottle top even if it is locked. I like how slender the bottle is as this makes it easy for me to hold the bottle while hiking or walking. It also fits well in my car cup holder. There are no scratches on the outside of the bottle and even after dropping it there are no dings to the exterior.
I plan on continuing to use this bottle on a daily basis (at work and at home) and in the outdoors for fitness walks and hikes. I would like to thank GSI Outdoors for the opportunity to review the Glacier Stainless Microlite 500 Bottle.
