deFUNKit-Permanent Odor Control (machine wash) and Shoe & Gear Deodorizer

The manufacturer provided these products for the purpose of this review.

I will say my cycling jerseys sink after a ride and my athletic shoes do not smell the best after wearing them all day (I hope no one I know is reading this). I was excited to receive the deFUNKit products and give them a try. I received one permanent Odor Control (machine wash) kit and the Shoe & Gear Deodorizer. The manufacturer advertises that this product is designed to remove the build up of soap scum/body oils and then creates a fabric shield to prevent future odor. I read on the manufacture website that a garment will be odor free if not washed between wearing and that it can be washed 20 times and still have odor control.

First I tried a few sprays of the Shoe & Gear Deodorizer in my athletic shoes. Right away there was a refreshing scent of peppermint. Approximately three days a week I walk to and from work. My feet tend to sweat during a workday since they are cooped up in my shoes without much ventilation. I was pleased that after walking to and from work and wearing my athletic shoes most of the day there was no stinky smell and there was no sticky residue from the deodorizer. It will be interesting to see how long the Shoe & Gear Deodorizer keeps my shoes smelling fresh.

It took me a few days to figure out what clothing items I wanted to treat with the Permanent Odor Control. I picked out three moisture wicking (synthetic) athletic shirts and four cycling jerseys. I based my selection on the tops I wear frequently. I followed the directions on the packaging, which resulted in two washings (pre-wash and odor control wash) of the garments and three different packages of powders to achieve the permanent odor control that is advertised. During the second washing two of the powders are added to the cycle, one of which had a dark orange hue. When the cycle was complete I noticed some orange spots on my cycling jerseys. I added some stain remover to the orange spots and after a second washing they were removed. I know I followed the directions as indicated, so I began to think that the orange powder was not fully dissolved in the wash cycle. I was just happy the orange spots were gone. The manufacturer notes that whites may no be as bright after the treatment, but there was no noticeable change of the overall brightness of the white fabrics. The garments smelled fresh after treatment and air-drying. There was no harsh chemical smell. It will be interesting to see how long I can wear the treated garments before I start to notice a foul smell.

Can you see the orange spot?

Final Update December 15, 2016

I will say that I absolutely love the deFUNKit -Permanent Odor Control (machine wash) and Shoe & Gear Deodorizer. I will admit I did not wear my shirts or cycling jerseys for more than three times before washing them. I think when I go camping or backpacking for several days I will be wearing my shirts for more than three times.

While on the trail cycling I noticed that I was not stinky after working up a sweat. This made me very happy! My jersey smelled fresh and clean, even though it was damp from sweat. That evening after the jersey dried it did not smell like body odor or sweat. This product is incredible!

After I removed the initial stains from the treatment there has not been any additional staining or discoloration of my garments. The garment material feels as it did prior to treatment with no stiffness or scratchiness.

I have sprayed my athletic shoes, rubber flip-flops, and a blanket with the Shoe & Gear Deodorizer. The items sprayed smelled fresh with a light peppermint scent and the items were not sticky to the touch. My shoes stayed fresh smelling for about five days of wearing the shoes daily.

I am very happy with both of these products. I plan to buy more deFUNKit when my clothes need to be treated again or when I get a new collection of cycling jerseys.

The deFUNKit Permanent Odor Control (machine wash) retails for $19.95 and the Shoe & Gear Deodorizer (4 oz.) retails for $9.95.
