Supplied by Aladdin for test purposes: Test by Coy Starnes
When I think of Aladdin products I usually think of insulated thermos bottles. So when the opportunity to test the Aladdin 16 oz. To-Go-Tumbler came along I had to first go see exactly what one was. Then I asked myself, what would I need one for, I mean after all, it looks pretty much like most of the plastic glasses (an oxymoron if there ever was one) sitting in my kitchen cabinet.. But now that I have my hands on the Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler I have to say it looks like a very useful item.
And along those lines, I would say that sometimes it’s the little things that make a pretty common item noteworthy. For instance, the To-Go-Tumbler features a screw on lid, so that when taking it away from the table where you are supposed to sit and eat…say to the couch, there is much less chance of spilling my drink. And of course a lid would not be very useful without a straw to drink with. The straw that comes with the To-Go-Tumbler is not just as straight tube. It features a bulbous ring down near the bottom so that the straw will stay put as long as the lid is screwed onto the tumbler, In fact, if you look at this image closely (click to view even larger) you can see the protrusion I am speaking of.
The tumbler is double walled which helps with less sweating. It is designed for cold drinks. It is also dishwasher safe so cleanup should be a snap. This leads me to believe that it would be OK for pretty hot drinks since a dishwasher produces very hot water, but I’ll stick with what they recommend. Actually, they don’t say one way or the other, except to mention it is good for iced coffee, and when finding it on the product page it shows up under the “Cold Drink” category. And for the record, the Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler retails for $9.99 and can be purchased at www.aladdin-pmi.com.
One other thing to keep in mind is that the plastic used for this tumbler is BPA-Free. BPA stands for Bisphenol A which is an organic compound used to make polycarbonate plastic. Recently this has been determined to be possibly toxic, especially to young children, so there has been a major push to get away from using it. I don’t know if it is all that dangerous but I prefer BPA-Free products just to be on the safe side. If you’re interested, a search on the internet for BPA Free will give you plenty to look over.

Aladdin 16oz. To-Go-Tumbler Update
December 30, 2010
I have enjoyed using the Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler over the past month. I have used it mostly around the house but have also taken it with me as I leave a few times, usually in the cup holder in my truck. It fits the cup holder perfectly, and with the straw and screw on lid there was not much danger in spilling anything in my truck. I also carried it on a kayaking day trip. Again, it fits the cup holder in my kayak so there was little chance of it falling over. I have used it mostly for water but have used it for iced tea, milk and orange juice.
I don’t have a lot to say about my actual use other than when I did have iced water or tea in the cup it did not sweat. One thing I did not anticipate was that the glass is not quite as cold feeling in my hands. This is nice in the winter when holding a cold glass is not a lot of fun.
When I used the To-Go-Tumbler on my kayaking trip I noticed that the lid is dished downward a little. This allowed a little of my paddle splash to accumulate around the lid but if any got down into the drink I did not notice it. When I picked up the glass to get a sip I would tip the glass to the side a little and a few drops would roll off. So when I got home I cleaned and dried the glass and did a little experiment. Oops, what water I placed on top pretty much ran straight into the glass. Oh well, apparently I did not get enough lake water in the glass to make me sick. However, the next time I use it kayaking I will be more careful not to splash the glass. It only happened when I paddled hard but for some reason I always seem to want to sprint a little when I’m out kayaking. Here is a photo I took of the To-Go-Tumbler while on this paddle.
I have found that cleaning the To-Go-Tumbler is very easy. I just load it in the dishwasher along with the rest of the dishes. I place the straw in with the forks and spoons and so far, that seems to get the straw clean.
That’s all for now. I will reveal my final thoughts after another month of use so stay tuned for the last update.

Aladdin 16oz. To-Go-Tumbler Update
February 28, 2011
I have now been using the To-Go-Tumbler for a little over three months. I have been extremely pleased with the tumbler so far. The 16 oz size is big enough that once I fix a drink for watching TV or sitting at the computer, I don’t have to get up and refill it very often. I have used it for ice tea mostly and I especially like that I can sit it on my desk and not have to worry about the glass sweating.
After three months use I can better comment on the durability. The only thing I detect are some faint scratches on the inside of the glass which I am guessing came from placing it in the dishwasher. My dishwasher is around 10 yeas old and the rubber coating on several of the prongs have worn off. Here is a photo of the tumbler but you really can’t see what I’m talking about.

Conclusion: I heartily recommend the Aladdin To-Go-Tumbler. And while I used it around the house more than anything, it is also handy to take with me in my truck or the wife’s car. My one complaint is that when I got ready to use it, I often had to track it down, only to find the wife or daughter already using it. If I ever run across one in town I’m going to pick up a spare.
I am from northeast Alabama where I spend a lot of my time divided among several hobbies that include backpacking and dayhiking, canoeing and kayaking, and just getting out enjoying nature.
