The Gluten Free Bar

~Kevin

Really?  Another bar?

There are many different types of bars on the market.  Energy bars for before and after you work out, bars to get you through the day and bars to eat on the run between meals and so on.  Each one of them has a specific purpose and has a balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats to help you for whatever purpose you choose.  Along with their makeup, they should be easy to consume, light and of course tasty.  After all an energy bar not tasty makes it hard to consume.

I have tried a lot of them. So why another energy bar?  Aren’t we overloaded with nutrition bars?  Well, I’m new to the gluten free world, so a chance to try a new energy bar, a gluten free bar, was perfect for me.  The Gluten Free Bar Company had a specific purpose in mind:  To create a high protein bar that was tasty; to supply the world with such a bar while minimizing the impact on the environment.  I believe they have achieved their goal.

The Gluten Free Bar
The Gluten Free Bar (GFB) has it all.  The balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats in it that makes it an ideal between meal bar, supplement bar or tasty snack just about any time during the day.  At just over 2 ounces, any one of the 6 different flavors fits comfortably in your briefcase, backpack or even hiking shorts.  Each single bar packs anywhere from 225 to 245 calories depending on the flavor.  Certainly enough to get through a couple of hours without feeling too full.  Flavors include: peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, dark chocolate coconut, coconut cashew crunch and my favorite flavor cranberry toasted almond.  A typical makeup for the cranberry toasted almond looks like this:
Calories: 225
Total Fat: 9.5g
Saturated Fat: 0.5g
Sodium: 105mg
Total Carbs: 27g
Dietary Fiber: 4g
Sugars: 18g
Protein: 12g
You can see it is loaded with everything including some sodium and sugars not always associated with energy bars.  While each bar varies slightly in its makeup, they don’t vary by more than a few grams in each category.  You can see that it is a high sugar content, perhaps higher than the average bar, but it is in a balance with the rest of the components.  The high protein content, which is what the founders of the bar wanted, helps with sustained energy as well as a post workout snack until you can get a meal.

If you have a peanut allergy, please note they do contain peanuts.  However the GFB have virtually every other certification one could want: Gluten free, non-MGO, Vegan, dairy free, cholesterol free, no trans-fat, soy free, and Kosher to name a few.  They certainly did their homework.

The website
The GFB website, http://www.theglutenfreebar.com/ contains information about each individual bar.  Ingredients, flavors, contents are listed in an easy to read page.  There are other gluten free products sold from the site, which I did not test, but look equally appetizing.  The website goes further by explaining the purpose for their company and they even published their diversion rate for the past months.  There is a lot on information on the website including other reviews, goals for the company and a bit about the founders as well.  Although you can find it in selected grocery stores and food specialty store, you order from the site.

They are not cheap.  Bars in general can cost anywhere from $1.50 a single bar to much higher.  These, if bought in boxes of 12 cost $2.33 a bar, or $28.00 a dozen.  You can buy sample bars of four for $10.00.  One neat feature is they will allow you to mix flavors in a case.  A case can contain all the flavors they have if you want to mix and match.  It takes anywhere from 2 – 5 days to reach you if you live in the US.

Finally the consumption:
I chose to eat one midmorning and midafternoon.  Wow, they are awesome.  This is the typical time when my energy starts to wane and I get sleepy.  I was able to maintain full energy after eating one between meals with no side effects.  Occasionally I can get a reaction from eating a bar with dairy, or gluten in it.  After eating one of these (or maybe two) I had no adverse reaction and was even looking for a third.  I am prone to the 2:00 meltdown.  But, as I said, these bars took over and I was good to go till the evening.

Did I mention they taste great?  The final straw, the real bonus you get when you eat one of these….they just taste great.  Each one tastes true to its flavor without any aftertastes.  With the six flavors listed above, I’m sure at least one flavor will satisfy you.

So let’s recap:  great purpose for creating the bar in the first place, great mission for the company, great balance with regard to nutrition, great taste, small in size but filling…..seems like a win win win win with this one.  I would strongly recommend trying it.
