Review by Arnie P
The Coyote WP shoes were provided by HI-TEC for review purposes. The Coyote WP shoe is part of HI-TEC’s waterproof shoe collection. The Coyote WP shoe is available in sizes ranging from 7 to 12 in half sizes, and 13 in a whole size.

A shoe box does not often get my attention, but this one did with the inscription of “Inspired by Life” under the company name HI-TEC. The Coyote WP shoe is a waterproof low cut shoe with conventional laces. The lace loops near the toe end are hinged. This provides greater flexibility where there is a greater amount of movement while walking. The toe and heel protectors are a molded part of the Vibram soles. They are barely noticeable but appear to be very functional. The top part of the shoe is a combination of suede and fabric. The tongue is fully gusseted which should help keep out trail debris. The shoe has Ortholite inserts.

Trying them on
I tried the Coyote WP shoes with a heavy pair of 100% wool socks. My feet slid easily and quickly. I did not miss having a loop at the heel to assist in inserting my feet. The heel part at the back of the shoe is flat and that makes for easier entry into the shoe. The initial comfort was excellent. I will mention more about a break in period in my next report. The break in time has greatly reduced over the years and sometimes I take it for granted. I am looking forward to trying out the Coyote WP shoes for my almost daily walks, group hikes, working around the yard, and hopefully backpacking as soon as weather cooperates. Please check back in about a month when I will have more to say.
I have been wearing the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes 3-4 times a week for about 10-14 hours a day during this period. I hiked in Franconia New Hampshire, around my neighborhood, yard work, and going to the gym.
Walking the dog
I take my daughter’s dog for an hour walk almost daily and have been wearing the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoe about 3 times a week during these walks. This part Lab 70 plus pound dog can generate a lot of pulling power when seeing other dogs, and wildlife especially squirrels. We walk on the streets as well as wooded areas. I have had adequate traction for all these walks. I have been in wet areas and had no problem getting wet.
At the gym
I have been wearing the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes about 3 times a week for going to the gym as well as working out in the gym. When using the treadmill I usually exercise from 20 to 30 minutes at a speed of 3.6 mph. What I really liked doing with these shoes is calf raising. It seems the greater stiffness of the soles allows me to do heavier weights. I have found this exercise excellent preparation for backpacking. These shoes gave me the support to do this exercise well.
I have been using the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes for a a variety of tasks in my yard. With the amount of rain we have been getting I have mowed the lawn any day that is dry. I have a non motorized reel mower and these shoes provide all the traction I need. I have a few sections of my yard where I don’t cut and the vegetation grows tall. It is nice to be able to pass through this area in the morning when it is wet with dew and not get my feet wet. I have been on my home made ladder with narrow rungs and have found these shoes very comfortable even when the rungs for a long time. This was one of my problems where I wore sneakers for this job. I have been putting a walk between the end of my driveway and the entrance of my cellar. Recently I bought 60 patio blocks for this pathway. Carrying these 35 pound blocks from my truck to the walkway was easier because of the added stability the shoes provided. I had to a lot of digging of soil for this project and found keeping the debris out of the shoe was easy, when some did get in it was also easy to get out.
Mittersill Alpine Resort
We spend a week of time share at the Mittersill Alpine resort in May and again in November. All the buildings in this little village are built with a Swiss chalet motif. I took a few walks in in this neighborhood in my HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes. The resort is a convenient place to stay as it is close to many great hiking trails.
Artist Bluff and Bald Mountain (elevation 2340 feet each)
This has been one of my favorite places to hike over the years when I visit this area. It is short at 1-1/2 miles but offers a sample of most of the hiking conditions in the White Mountains. I was returning to do this hike with the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes because I knew the wind would be stronger and there was a considerable chance of rain. The winds were stronger gusting to about 45 mph. Looking to the west the skies were clear, the temperature was in the 80’s, but the view to the east was very cloudy. When I reached the peak on Bald Mountain I had difficulty keeping my balance and did not stay long. When the wind came from the east it sometimes had small droplets of water which almost felt like insect biting. There are some very steep sections on this trail and I had no trouble with traction in either direction.
I am very pleased with HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes as they are providing comfort, stability and keep me dry. I have not used shoes with tie laces for some time and am still getting used to it again. Please check back in about a month when I will have more to say.
A last look
I was recently reminded by someone at the gym who reads my reviews that he had not seen my last look at the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes. It is a little late but that means more time for testing. I have continued doing most of the activities of the last test period adding a few hikes in the Harold Parker State Forest. In the first month of this test period I wore these shoes on alternate days, then in the last month I have worm them almost every day.
More on sole stiffness
I had mentioned sole stiffness earlier in my review but think making it clearer might be helpful. There are two kinds of stiffness in the sole of the shoe. There is the heel to toe stiffness and the stiffness from side to side. The side to side affects the stability of the ankle. The heel to toe stiffness is useful under a limited situations. One such condition is in mountain climbing in snow where one needs to dig the toe into the snow for traction. For other conditions this kind of stiffness hinders rather than helps. This kind of stiffness restricts the forward motion while walking especially in flat areas. I find the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes performed well for the trails I encountered.
My daily routine consists of the following; going to the gym, walking the dog, shopping, weekly hikes and occasional seminars. When walking the dog she does not run after as many things but when she does it is unexpectedly and with more force, so I need alertness as well as traction which I am consistently getting with the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes. In the gym the only place I don’t wear them is in the shower. On the tread mill I have not been going over 3.6 mph. I think this is a combination of my slowing down and the shoes. I would only run in these shoes if it was critical. I have no trouble driving a standard shift with these shoes. One of the benefits of wearing these shoes at seminars is my feet stay warm when going from a hot car to a very cold room and sitting for a long time at a seminar.
We have had some heavy downpours this summer and it seems like I am always able to find the deep puddles when walking in a parking lot. I was able to keep very dry despite having walked through several puddles. It is always better to be in a cold room at a seminar with dry warm feet than cold wet ones.
Hot weather and odor
This has been a hot and mostly humid summer. These shoes are waterproof and a shoe good for all seasons. I had expected my feet to sweat a lot more than they did. I did not really notice my feet sweating but on occasion I did notice sweat was forming on my legs and heading down in my socks and shoes. A few times I did notice a slight odor in my shoes. The odor did not get worse over time and it does mostly go away without my having to do anything different. I think the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes performed above my expectations for the hot and humid weather I experienced. I think this is a good indication these shoes are well ventilated.
Harold Parker State Forest
I have been going hiking with a group about twice a month. These hikes are about 2 hours long and the pace is slow as the number of retired hikers is in the 20-30 range. The trail varies from smooth to rocky and a lot of exposed roots are on the trails. The HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes have provided excellent traction and comfort on all my hikes. I have not slipped, but a few times I did not raise my foot high enough and got caught but not enough to cause me to fall.
I have enjoyed all the time I have spent in the HI-TEC Coyote WP shoes. A rough estimate would be about 700 hours. The comfort was outstanding, I did not get any blisters, and I did not get any blood blisters from stubbing my toes. Lastly my feet stayed dry. I wish to thank 4alloutdoors.org and HI-TEC for the opportunity to review the Coyote WP shoes.
