Update – Lowa San Francisco GTX

Lowa San Francisco GTX

When I received the Lowa San Francisco GTX shoe and pulled them out of the box I was immediately impressed with the style and look of the shoe. I was looking for a casual, comfortable, everyday shoe. I have worn them every day for most of the day since I received them and so far I have not been disappointed. The GTX (I will refer to the shoe as the GPX throughout the review) comes in three color combinations; anthracite/Blue, brown/orange and olive/red. I received the brown/orange and really like the color combination. In casual shoes I wear an US 11.5 wide but wide was not offered so I requested size US 12 and they fit me well. After wearing them for several days, I have not had any foot discomfort.

Below in italics is right off the Lowa website describing the GTX (https://www.lowaboots.com/mens/casuals-sandals/san-francisco-gtx%C2%AE?id=4018):
• Super comfortable, waterproof, lightweight travel/trail shoe with outstanding temperature regulation.
• UPPER: Nubuk leather.
• LINING: New GORE-TEX® SURROUND™ technology – a unique temperature regulation with 360° breathability in the shoe.
• MIDSOLE: PU Monowrap®
• OUTSOLE: LOWA Summer Travel
The insole has a thicker heel than most of my shoes and I believe that really adds to the comfort of the shoes. The uppers are a soft Nubuk leather that is flexible and the midsole is called a PU Monowrap that is very similar to a cross training sneaker, rather than a boot or a running shoe. It midsole is not very thick but the insole makes up for any lack of cushion. The tread is like no other I have seen before and it works well on wet terrazzo, tile and smooth concrete floors. One concern I do have with the tread is small objects getting lodged in the pattern and being hard to get out but that is something I will see as I continue wearing them for this review. I have not been able to test the GTX in hot weather yet and not sure if I will get the opportunity before winter sets in to see how the 360 degree breathability works. The hottest temperature to date that I have worn the shoes has been 75 degrees F (24C). I did not have any issues with my feet feeling hot even with the thicker socks I was wearing (it was a cool morning). I deliberately walked through several big puddles to test the waterproofing. I am happy to report that it worked perfectly and my feet stayed dry. I thought that the Nubuk leather would spot when water got on it but the water rolled off like it does off a duck. There were not any wet spots on the shoes.

I have had many compliments on the shoes. I am a 47 year old, fashion challenged male. When I pulled out the shoes and showed my 17 year old son, he said he would like them when I am done with the review. That tells me that they are stylish shoes. Young and old have told me they like the shoes so I feel I finally may have some “hip” shoes. The Lowa website has the GTX for sale for $225US. So far I find them to be worth the price and I look forward to wearing them and reporting back to you in about a month.

Update Lowa San Francisco GTX

I have been enjoying the LOWA San Francisco  GTX Surround for almost 2 months now and I can’t say enough about how much I like these shoes.  They are engineered with GORE-TEX® SURROUND wearable technology for feet that provides 360 degrees of temperature regulation and breathability via ventilation outlets on sides and bottom. This is important since the foot’s sweat glands are on the bottom of the sole. The innovative open sole construction allows air to circulate throughout the shoe to keep feet comfortably dry in both warm and wet weather.

I wear them at least three full days a week and then in the evenings on the other days.  I have worn them for long walks (3-5 miles/5-8 kilometers) with my wife and dogs and my feet felt like I had only walked down the hall.  They are very comfortable and I have yet to have any pain from wearing them like I may have with other shoes.  I have worn them on trails that are smooth and they also performed very well there.  I have yet to try them on a trail that is rocky or full of roots but I don’t think the San Francisco GTX Surround is designed for that.  I can be on my feet all day with these shoes without any issues.

Because we have had such a mild to warm fall and winter in South Carolina, I have been able to really test the SURROUND feature.   We have had temperatures in the mid 80’s F (29 C) and my feet never felt hot or even warm.  I look forward to next summer and being able to enjoy cool feet all summer long.   We have also had a very wet fall and winter here and my feet stay completely dry unless of course I step into a puddle that is higher than my shoe.!  Water rolls off the shoe like it would off the back of a duck.

I continue to get nothing but positive feedback on the look and style of the LOWA San Francisco GTX SURROUND.  People are always commenting in a good way.  They look great with shorts, jeans, hiking pants and even casual dress pants.  I will continue to wear them often although as great as they are in the heat, my feet do get cold in them when the temperature dips below freezing.  I have not noticed any wear on any part of the shoe including the sole were I usually show wear on the back, outside of the sole.  I will have an update in about a month.  Until then I will keep enjoying the LOWA San Francisco GTX.

Final Look – Lowa San Francisco GTX

The Lowa San Francisco GTX quickly became my go to shoe and it continues to be my favorite in my closet.  Now that the weather in South Carolina has turned hot quickly I have really been able to enjoy the “cooling” feature of these shoes.

The San Francisco GTX looks as good now as they did when I pulled them out of the box.  The Gore-Tex allows water and dirt to roll off the shoe or dirt easily wipes right off.  Also, the soles are not showing any wear.  My running shoes all wear on the outside back heal.  Granted I am not running in these shoes but wearing them almost on a daily bases and there still is no wear showing.

I enjoy these shoes so much that I have been wearing them in subfreezing weather and my feet do get a little cool.  These shoes are made for warm weather and Lowa does not claim they will keep your feet warm so I understand why this happens. I will sacrifice a little cool on my feet for the comfort and style the San Francisco GTX offers. I plan on continuing to wear these great shoes and may even buy another pair in a different color.  Thank you Lowa for the allowing me to test the San Francisco GTX and 4alloutdoors.org for opportunity.
