I live in Maine, and this year we’ve had way too much rain, so I haven’t been able to kayak much. Its either raining, or the water is running too high and rough. Since I got my Spring Wet Suit, I have been anxious to try it out, so I finally decided to put it on and just go to the lake and see if it kept me warm. The air temperature was 65 F (yep, in mid-July) and the water was about 58F. I put the suit on at home and found it fit well enough that I could put on a pair of loose pants and a t-shirt. There isn’t a place to change at the lake, so I decided that was the best choice. The wet suit fits very well through the legs and body, although the arms are a bit loose. Guess that means I need to bulk up some.

Getting warmed up
I got over to the lake, and only one older couple was there and they weren’t paying attention, so I walked into the water slowly, and noticed how cold the water was on my legs and I thought about changing my mind about going in. I kept going, and once I went in far enough that the water came above the length of my wet suit, it didn’t feel so cold. I played around in the water for a bit, and definitely felt warmer as I moved around. The suit made me want to stay in the water – and more anxious for the water levels to return to safer levels.

Front of wetsuit
One of the best things about the suit is that it will keep me warmer, so I can stay out on and in the water longer. I like the shorter length of the spring suit for this time of year though – so I won’t get too warm on sunny days. I like rolling the kayak though, and doing different kayak escapes, so I spend a lot of time in the water, not just in the kayak.
I’ll be writing more as soon as I can get out on the river. All it will take is three days without rain.
