When I sleep away from home, the one thing that really helps me to get a good nights sleep is a comfortable pillow. I’ve used rolled up clothing and inflatable pillows while camping, neither
of which was quite right. While flying, I’ve tried all sorts of different set ups, and usually end up with a kink in my neck. Not sleeping well leads to less energy the next day, and as my kids can attest, a grouchy mom.
Last week, I opened my mailbox to find a Grand Trunk Adjustable pillow for review. I was shocked at first – it weighs almost nothing (.625 lbs to be exact). It comes in its own little stuff sack making it easy to compress and pack away while traveling. The pillow itself has a soft, smooth texture that is comfortable against my skin. I like that I can adjust the size by just tightening or loosening the drawstring. I’ve used it while camping and found that once adjusted, it kept its size. The shape molded to the contour of my head enough that it felt soft, but not so much that I could feel the ground through the pillow. I slept very well, even though we were on rough ground.
I have two long flights coming up, and am looking forward to trying the pillow on the plane. Sleeping on the plane is always a challenge, especially if you don’t want your head to end up on the shoulder of the person sitting next to you (although it could be a great way to meet someone, lol). I’ll update this review in about a month, and we’ll see how well its working out. I’m curious as to how it works when the ground is very cold – does it provide any insulation?
Update 11/2010
Well, I’ve now used the Grand Trunk Adjustable Pillow about 25 times. Its been on airplanes, car rides, camping trips, visits to friends and at home in my bed. No matter where we go, it adjusts to the situation. I can open it up fully, and place it against the window of the plane, and sleep without worry my head is going to bounce around, or hit the buy sitting next to me. In the car, I do the same, or recline my seat and put it on the head rest. On camping trips, I tend to only open it up part way, so it provides more cushion, even though its not as big. I don’t move around too much, so this works great for me. I’ve taken it to use at friends houses, so I never have to deal with a lumpy, bumpy pillow. Somehow I hurt my neck, and found sleeping difficult. Getting comfortable just wasn’t happening. I grabbed the Adjustable pillow, and I opened it partway, stuck it under my neck and went right to sleep. I really think my neck healed more quickly, because I could keep it in one position while I slept. The pillow amazingly shows no signs of wear. The compression cord works smoothly, and locks in place easily. The stuff sack is tiny – but usable. This is definitely an item that will find its way under my Christmas tree for family members. Check back soon for an update on further use. I’ll be doing a few snow camping trips this winter, and will definitely be trying this out! I’m guessing by then, I’ll need to wash it also, and will report back on that experience.
