GSI Pinnacle Cookset

September 10, 2009

Last weekend, two of my kids and I headed out for a few days of camping, hiking and kayaking.  We had some beautiful weather – sunny and dry during the day, and cool at night.  One night it went down to 35 F, which was a bit of a surprise for early September.

Since we were setting up a ‘base’ camp, and heading out from there, we made good use of the new GSI Cookset.   Other than a few Sporks, we didn’t need anything else to eat or cook with (besides the food and stove of  course).

GSI Pinnacle Cookset

GSI Pinnacle Cookset

The set contains the following: 3 L Pot, 2 L Pot, 2 Strainer Lids, 9″ Frypan, 4-14 fl. oz. insulated mugs, 4-14 fl. oz. bowls, 4 7.5″ plates, 4 Sip-It Tops, Folding Pot Gripper and a Welded Sink.  One thing I noticed before even leaving the house, was that once unpacked, it is super easy to repack.   Everything packs up inside of the sink, and is very compact. The bowls fit inside the cups, and the Pot Gripper fits inside one set.  When I knew I was getting it, I saw its weight advertised at 3 lb 8 oz.  I could not figure out how all of that stuff, could only weigh that much.  I figured that it must be either smaller than I pictured, or made in a flimsy manner.  I was very surprised when I opened it up – it was not only a much higher quality construction, but also seemed ‘bigger’ too.

All of the cookware is coated with 3 layers of Teflon coating.  The cups/bowls fit together nicely, and hold a decent amount.   We made oatmeal one morning, using the 2 L pot to boil the water, and  individual bowls and cups for the oatmeal and hot chocolate.   Perfect sizes!   For dinner, we made up some dehydrated meals and found that pouring the ingredients into the bowls, and filling with the hot water worked well.  We put the tops on the bowls (the ‘cup’ lids fit the bowls also) and they worked to keep the heat in, long enough to rehydrate the food.  When we were done it was easy enough to clean up, pack up and go.

As the weather cools, we’ll be using the Pinnacle Cookset more frequently, as we tend to eat more, and base camp more during the cooler weather.  I’m really looking forward to trying it out during the winter, ice fishing and snowshoeing.   The picture is taken from the GSI website: http://gsioutdoors.com I’ll post some pictures of the set in use shortly.
