Suisse Sport Wyoming 18' x 10' family tent review

May 30, 2009

I recently received a huge, 3 room tent for review. While I haven’t had a chance to camp in it, I thought I would show some setup pics and how easy it is to use. I have a big family, and we like to camp. It had been hard to find a quality tent, that we could all fit inside.

First, though here are some details about the tent.

“A versatile, 3-room all-weather tent for protected, comfortable camping. Features an 1000 mm coated rain fly for wet weather as well as mesh doors, windows and ceiling for drier, warmer weather. Includes utility pockets for convenient storage of your gear.”

There are seven poles total to hold up the tent. Five smaller poles that are about five shock cord sections long. These 5 hold up the main part of the tent. Then there are two sections that are about seven shock cord sections long that hold up either end of the tent. The five section poles slide through sleeves and connect in a hub at the top of the tent.

The 5 smaller poles all connect to the hub on top of the tent.

From there each section also has a clip to hold the tent to the poles. The larger seven sectioned poles connect in a half moon shape to make up the ends of the tent.

After that, the rain fly goes over the top with ease. The thing I like about the rain fly, is not only does it clip in at the bottom, but all along the under side of the fly it has hook and loop closure tabs to hold the fly to the poles.

This tent also has two room dividers, a piece of material that hangs from either end of the tent to divide up the rooms. Another neat feature is the small zippered pockets on the front. They are accessible from the inside or outside. The pockets help keep things organized and out of the way.

The tent was easy to set up and only took me a few minutes – great for a first attempt.

Update First Campout.

Due to work and other engagements, I have not been able to get out the last couple of weekends like I wanted. Had to go to Huntington Beach for the week, yeah, its a tough job. So Friday night, I told my 8 year old that her and two other 8 year old kids could sleep out in the tent with me. Was I asking for trouble? 3-8 year olds camping out on the edge of the woods with bears all over?

Ok, Maybe not all over but we do have black bears that like to roam into basecamp at night and get in the trash. So, the two other boys who live about 50 yards away had cell phones their moms had given them in case they got scared….Oh My…

When we climbed into the tent about 9:30 that night, the sky was clear, however the weather had called for a 40% chance of thunderstorms overnight so I left the rainfly on the tent. I was worried the kids might get scared if the storms rolled in.

Funny how peer pressure works, especially with 8 YO’s. One kid’s dad said he’d be surprised if the boy stayed out all night. I knew mine would, as we’ve camped before. But the other two have not camped much if ever. I guess all three of them sleeping there provided enough “braveness” for them all to stay out, because they all did!! Their moms didnt call either. I thought for sure they would, when it started raining about 2:00 in the morning.

I really enjoyed this tent. It set up is very easily with 7 poles and a rain fly. Everything fit together very well, and made set-up a breeze.

About midnight the wind picked up, gusting somewhere around 7-10 mph would be my guess and the tent did well. Like I noted it started raining about 2:00 in the morning. I looked around a few times during the night and was very happy to not see any leaks! The sleeping bags stayed dry and so did the kids. Nothing takes the fun out of camping more than being inside a wet tent – and with the Wyoming, that wasn’t a problem.

Besides myself, my full size air matress, a 75 lb dog, here were 3-8 yo kids in this tent friday night. The 3 of them all slept in one end, and I had the air matress and dog in the middle section. We still had one section to go as this tent is huge! It rained on us for a couple of hours, and it was cloudy with temps down to about 50 deg over night.

The tent is so roomy that the three 8-year-olds camped out at one end and felt like they had their own, special hang out space, sometimes even forgetting I was right there in the section next door.

The tent was both comfortable and dry all night!

The next morning, after the kids went home that’s all they could talk about was camping out again in the tent!

One of the best things about camping, is getting to spend time together with my kids. This family sized tent makes it  easy – which makes it even more enjoyable. The tent is well made, easy to put up, and comfortable to use.

A neat special feature — two foot locker-style storage pockets, that don’t take up any tent space, because they jut outward as extensions of the front of the tent.  With zippers both on the inside and outside of the tent, you can access your gear from either place.

Stay tuned for the next adventure!
